A New Software House for People Who Outsmart, Outdream and Outlive

by MikalFM. Average Reading Time: about 2 minutes.

If your work day involves colleagues and an inbox, at some point you’ve probably wondered:

is this as good as it gets?

The answer to that question may surprise you.

Consider:

And when all is said and done life suffers. Fewer family dinners, increased stress related health issues and text messages in lieu of phone calls.

People Not Assets

But the news gets worse before it gets better. Our work day is based on the premise that our lives bend to the will of our work. And our tools and technology do the same.

The premise is that people are not people. They are assets, equipment, or factories. And if you need more from your equipment you just work them longer and harder. In general even the coming age of software revolves around the idea that the primary goal of collaboration is cost reduction or at best better work flow management.

When was the last time a piece of software actually made you feel better about your workday?

Tough, right? The reason is simple; the tools we use daily to ‘get ahead’ cater to and reflect the philosophies of individuals who see people as assets (or at worse, liabilities).

Outlive > Outwork

By this point it’s clear that if you want to get ahead in today’s work force with today’s tools you’re up against a stacked deck. Yet you’ve managed to outpace outsmart and outlive the competition all by playing a different game.

Better Software / Better World

You’ve decided not to live for work, but to let work help you live. You’ve decided that there are travel destinations that you can’t reach from your office. Your promotion may not have come like clockwork but you haven’t waited to spend your time richly- donating your time, your money, and your talents to causes that align with your passion.

What We Believe

At Qworky we believe: Better Software / Better World.

Our mission is to develop software and advanced technologies to help individuals and organizations design a better workday, beginning with better meeting. We aim to do so with an emphasis on diverse perspectives, positive reinforcement, humility, quirkiness and a drive for excellence.

So while today you remain one step ahead of roadblocks imposed by today’s way of thinking, we ask that tomorrow you Bring Qworky to the Table and partner to build a new workday more representative of those who fearlessly outsmart, outlive and outdream.

It’s a great point, Mikal, that the tools and technologies we use reflect the philosophies of the people who create the software. There are a lot of shared blind spots in the market today and great opportunities for software that’s designed an emphasis on diverse perspectives, positive reinforcement, humility and quirkiness as well as excellence.

There’s no question that a lot of tools aren’t built towards how we’d ideally work/live but are built either on what already is in vogue OR is written because something simply can be written. It’s always interesting to see how users run with software and how companies respond… or not. (I’d view Twitter’s built in retweet function to be a case of poor listening, for example). If Qworky can be that different company, that’d totally rock! It’s the right way of looking at the problems, seems to me….

Good post! It is sad that we are victims of technology. As much as we love technology, it does imprison us to longer working hours because of easy access via cellphones, text messges and even social networking sites.

As you know, I specialize in social media marketing and leveraging it for my brand and my clients’ brands, but still find myself sometimes getting caught up in it. The key I think with work and using technology is knowing when to turn it off and tune out! Setting boundaries is key! Not always easy, but necessary!

Seth Godin’s new book Linchpin has a chapter “The New World of Work” where he points out that the factory model that, for two hundred years, offered low-risk and high-stability for unthinking workers has fallen apart.

And the solution is not working harder and longer. Instead, it’s making a difference by doing work that’s really hard to find from anyone else.

I’m interested to see what you guys come up with…

@Lissa I fundamentally agree- we sometimes forget how to disconnect. I personally find that my biggest bursts of productivity occur after I’ve disconnected enough to ‘reboot’, ‘reset’ and ‘restart’
@adrian thanks. I’ll check out Linchpin. I haven’t read Seth’s work since purple cow.

Thanks everyone for your comments- we’re just as interested and eager to learn from you.
